The Indian textile industry is on the cusp of a significant transformation, thanks to the Uttar Pradesh government's bold and visionary move. In a major step towards self-reliance and global competitiveness, India's first Textile Machine Park is set to be established in Kanpur, specifically in Chaparghata village near Bhognipur. This groundbreaking initiative is not just a milestone for Uttar Pradesh but a game-changer for the entire textile ecosystem in India.
Spread across 875 acres, the Textile Machine Park will focus solely on textile machinery manufacturing, a domain where India has traditionally depended on imports. From circular knitting and printing machines to technical textile equipment and sewing machines, many of these essentials have been sourced from countries like Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, and various European nations. With the Kanpur park in place, these machines will now be manufactured domestically, creating a huge leap in self-reliance and reducing the dependency on costly imports.
According to Mr. Rakesh Sachan, Minister of MSME, Government of Uttar Pradesh, the initiative has received in-principle approval from Shri Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the government's commitment to revitalising the textile sector.
The idea behind this innovative move is to manufacture machinery and create a complete ecosystem that attracts global collaborations and fosters technological advancement. Over 200 large and medium units are expected to be set up in the park, and discussions with several major international companies are already underway.
Mr. Ravi Bhushan Arora, CEO of TBD – Textile Business Digest, emphasised the strategic importance of this initiative, noting that indigenous textile machinery manufacturing will be pivotal in meeting India's ambitious $350 billion trade target by 2030. He added that to reach this goal, the industry needs investments worth $70 billion, a large portion of which would otherwise go toward importing machinery, up to ?4 lakh crore. Therefore, boosting domestic capabilities is critical to reducing the trade deficit and enhancing export potential.
Backing this visionary project, Shri Giriraj Singh, Hon'ble Minister of Textiles, Government of India, has also extended full support, as confirmed by Mr. Kr Abhishek Ambasthaa, Director of UKSL. This backing from the state and central government reflects the national importance of the park and its potential to transform the textile manufacturing landscape.
Establishing the Textile Machine Park will generate significant employment, both directly and indirectly. Manufacturing units, ancillary businesses, logistics, and services will be set up around the park, creating thousands of jobs, particularly for the skilled and semi-skilled workforce. Additionally, Kanpur—historically known as the Manchester of the East—will regain its prominence as a textile powerhouse.
The development of India's first Textile Machine Park in Kanpur marks a new chapter for the textile industry. It promises to strengthen India's manufacturing base, reduce foreign dependency, attract global investments, and create massive employment opportunities. With the collaborative efforts of industry leaders, policymakers, and global partners, this initiative is poised to set a benchmark for other states.
